Calhoun (14-0, 8-0) vs. Buford (7-9.
2-0)
Calhoun has started off the 2015-2016
season with a bang. They are undefeated so far under the leadership of head
coach Vince Layson. The Yellowjackets are on a mission to improve on a State
Runner-Up and Sweet Sixteen appearance the last two seasons. Calhoun is loaded
in the backcourt with 6’4 senior, Mercer football commit, Kaelan Riley. Kaelan
is the all-time leading rebounder in Calhoun history, as well as
a 1,000 point scorer. Kaelan is averaging 16.1 points per game and 8.2
rebounds per game. Senior point guard Jireh Wilson holds the school assist
record and is averaging 13.1 points per game. Junior 6’5 Chapin Rierson, who
may be the most touted college basketball prospect for the Yellowjackets, is
shooting 40% from 3 point land and is gaining interest from Division 1 schools.
Also, keep your eye on Ray Reeves, who is the defensive specialist for Calhoun.
Expect a fast paced game with a balanced attack from the Yellowjackets.
Buford comes into the game
battle-tested, having played some of the best competition in the state.
Legendary coach Eddie Martin brings a wealth of experience and success to his
first year with the Wolves. Coach Martin has won seven state championships -
four with GAC and three with Norcross - and is on his way to establishing a
culture of success at Buford. The Wolves are led by sophomore guard Alex
Jones and Junior post Sahil Patel. Jones is drawing Division 1 attention
and is averaging 10.5 points per game as well as 7.5 assists. Expect Jones to
control the game for the Wolves, while 6’8 junior Sahil Patel will be looking
to establish the inside presence for Buford. Patel is averaging 12 points and 9
rebounds per game. The Wolves have a trio of players that can step up any given
night in senior guard Brandon Iverson, senior forward Will Springer, and junior
guard Dawson Wehunt. The Wolves will bring tough half court defense and a
patient offense to the matchup.
