6:00 PM Game #5 Match-Up - Buford HS Boys (GA- #2 5A) vs. Huntsville HS (AL)

6:00 PM Buford HS Boys (GA- #2 5A) vs. Huntsville HS (AL)

When you mention success in Georgia High School basketball, Coach Eddie Martin is normally at the top of most lists.  Last year, he saw the departure of some key seniors but his 2018-19 team has every intention on getting Coach Martin and Buford back to the state title game.  The Wolves are paced by a group of seniors and the most talented is forward Marcus Watson. The Oklahoma State commit is a physical bruiser with the ability to score in a multitude of ways. Senior guard Donnell Nixon is threat from deep and you must know where he is at all times.  Forward Eric Coleman (High Point University commit) is a transfer forward that gives Coach Martin a valuable new piece. Throw-in senior returners Brandon Green, Ashton Young and Bobby Miller, and the Wolves are as deep as anyone in 5A.

In his first season as Head Coach at Huntsville, Christian Schweers has not shied away from fierce competition.  Having already battled St. Pius earlier this season in Alabama, Coach Schweers bring his Panthers to Buford to take on one of the GA’s top 5A contenders.  The panthers are led by Alabama-Huntsville commit, Nathan Moore. Moore had multiple D1 offers but chose to stay close to home. He is a long, athletic forward that impacts the game on both ends, he will be critical in Huntsville battle Saturday night.  The backcourt leader for Huntsville is 6’1” senior JC Norris. The three year starter is a sniper from three and will share the PG duties. Norris is currently being recruited by D2 and D3 schools.

7:30 PM Game #6 - Buford HS Girls (GA) vs. Northview HS Girls (GA)

7:30 PM Buford HS Girls (GA) vs. Northview HS Girls (GA)

Our final game will feature a couple of Georgia’s top girls teams.

Buford girls have long been one of the bench-mark programs for girls basketball in the state of Georgia for years. Head Coach Gene Durden is as respected a coach as you will find. He has guided the Lady Wolves to three of the last four state championships and played in eight of the last ten state title games. They lost a lot of firepower off last year’s championship team, especially in do it all guard, Tori Ozment, who is a Freshman at Michigan State. Despite the losses, Buford’s expectations remain the same. They will rely on an aggressive defensive pressure system and attacking offense for thirty-two minutes.

Durden plays a deep bench typically, but will rely on returning JR guard, Tate Walters, who was an All-County and All-Region player a year ago. Buford seniors Preston Reid and Ebony Grant will be key pieces in helping Buford play at a championship level.

Northview comes in with one of the more talented rosters in GA. Versatile forward Ashlee Austin (Rice University signee) is the emotional leader of the team and is a stat stuffer. Playing alongside the inside presence of Charleston Southern commit Maya Richards gives Coach Chris Yarbrough a versatile attack. The Lady Titans have won 52 games the last two seasons. Yarbrough has helped lead Northview to back-back Final Four appearances. This will be Richards and Austin’s last opportunity to cut down the nets and break through for a State Championship. These are the type of games that Yarbrough wants to use to both test and challenge his team for their expected March run. “We set out this year to play some of the best teams in the state. Playing top teams like Buford are what makes you better come tournament time and I’ve always admired Coach Durden’s program. Buford is going to test us immensely with their pace and how well they are coached. We are just looking forward to this event and the chance to get better as a team,” says Yarbrough.

Junior PG Asjah Inniss will be one the key players as she will have to handle the ball against the Buford press. The night-cap and only girls game of the BCB/Buford event could be the best game of the day.

BCB Buford HS Showcase - Game #4 Match-Up Norcross HS vs West Charlotte (NC)

4:30 PM  Norcross HS (GA- #4 7A) vs. West Charlotte HS (NC)

The 4:30 matchup has the makings to be one of the best of the day.  Coach Jesse McMillan and his Blue Devils are no stranger to success and are once again one of the favorites to lift the GHSA 7A state title trophy come March.  Norcross is loaded with college prospects, all of which bring their own unique skill set to the court. The Blue Devils are led by the Southern Cal commit, PG Kyle Sturdivant.  Kyle is a polished point-guard with loads of experience and a talented group around him. That includes Senior Xavier University commit Daniel Ramsey, senior forward Issa Muhammad and senior guard Issac Martin.  The most heralded prospect on the Blue Devils may be junior guard Brandon Boston. Boston is one of the country’s top rated junior prospects and is being recruited by all of the blue-bloods of college hoops. Not to be forgotten, juniors Caleb Murphy and Kevon Eskridge provided Norcross with the depth needed to win each and every night.

West Charlotte and Coach Jacoby Davis will be traveling down I-85 from North Carolina and are excited to have the opportunity to compete against a national program like Norcross.  The Lions also have a talented roster loaded that features several college prospects to match up with Norcross. 6’8” Senior forward Patrick Williams, committed to FSU, and 6’6” sophomore forward Josiah Dow control the interior and both have the potential to score the basketball.  Coach Davis relies on a senior backcourt, both of which are willing to compete at both ends of the floor. 6’3” Quinton Thomas currently holds multiple mid-major Division 1 and high Division 2 offers, while 6’1” Cartier Jernigan is a division 1 prospect also. After a recent victory over Charlotte Christian, the Lions look to bolster their resume by knocking off one of Georgia’s best this Saturday in the 4:30 tip-off.

BCB Buford HS Showcase - Game # 3 Match-Up GAC vs Lithonia HS

3:00 PM  GAC (GA- #2 4A) vs. Lithonia HS (GA- #4 5A)

Coach David Eaton and Spartans have every intention to defend their state title this season and will continue a challenging schedule when they face the Lithonia Bulldogs this weekend.  The Spartans have a well balanced team but it all starts with senior guards, Ben Sheppard and Hunter McIntosh. The 6’4” Sheppard, a Belmont University commit, has the ability to score in a variety of ways and can heat up in a hurry.  His backcourt running mate, the unsigned McIntosh controls more of the offense but is just as capable to carry the scoring load. Senior do-it-all guard Roy Dixon, shot-blocking senior post Shawn Ohuabunwa and the senior Michigan football commit Chris Hinton all contribute for a GAC team that likes to score the basketball and already topped 100 points this season. David Eaton, who is a GAC alum himself, and won a state championship as a coach in South Carolina, before taking over at GAC is entering his 4th season.

One of state’s best regions has always been Region 5 AAAAA in Dekalb County and Coach Wallace Corker’s Bulldogs have proven to be a great test each and every year.  The Bulldogs have also played a challenging schedule thus far and have relied on a well balanced backcourt trio. Seniors Brison Rockcliffe and N’Kyzie Hawkins provide Coach Corker with experienced guards, each of which are capable to carry the team on any given night.  Junior Eric Graines' scoring and athletic finishes have given the Bulldogs a lift early this season. This should be a great guard matchup across the board come Saturday. Intriguing senior forward prospect Justin Myles is a player still scratching the surface and will need to give some good minutes as well vs GAC.

BCB Buford Showcase Game #2 - Wheeler vs Aquinas

1:30 PM  Wheeler HS (GA- #3 7A) vs. Aquinas HS (GA)

In his second season as the Wheeler Head Coach, Larry Thompson and the Wildcats are off to a 5-1 start with aspirations of improving on their Elite Eight 7A finish last season.  The Wildcats have the luxury of leaning on one of the states best and most seasoned players, Denver commit Roscoe Eastmond. Eastmond’s experience and ability to control the tempo allow for California commit Charles Smith IV to score in a variety of ways in transition or in the half-court.  Senior forward Malachi Rhodes gives Coach Thompson an inside presence that teams will have to honor each night and athletic forward Sam Hines Jr. is a highlight reel waiting to happen at any second. With each game and one of the toughest region schedules in the state, this years Wheeler team will gain the much needed familiarity that will make them a contender come March.

Over the last two seasons, defending 1A-Private State Champs Aquinas High School have gone an impressive 53-7 under Head Coach Darren Douglas. After losing some key seniors from last years title team, Coach Douglas has regrouped with a team led by a trio of juniors and no seniors on the roster.  Point guard Johnathan Taylor has taken on the lead-guard responsibilities for the Irish this season while 6’4” wing-man Zy Wright has played well and been one of the team’s leading scorers. 6’8” Junior Forward Chris Williams will be key vs Wheeler with his ability to matchup with Rhodes on the interior.  Look for Aquinas to rely on their defensive ability to slow down the Wildcats and make this a possession game.

BCB Buford HS Showcase - Game # 1 Match-Up St.Pius vs Newton HS

12:00 PM St Pius (GA- #3 4A) vs. Newton HS (GA- #7 7A)

The buzz surrounding this year’s showcase has been building for a year. In 2017, the night before the event that featured top teams in GA facing off the top teams from the Southeast, the city of Atlanta and some of the Southeast was hit hard by a snowstorm. Parts of Georgia received over 7 inches of snow leading to cancelling the event.

The opening game of the 2nd annual BCB/Buford Showcase brings together two Georgia high schools with championship aspirations.  Coach Aaron Parr and his Golden Lions have been to the GA State title game in 4A the last two years and with a senior-laden team returning, don’t be surprised to see them there again in 2019.  Matthew Gonzalo is a fiery competitor who has the ability to score from deep and create for others, while his twin brother Brian provides another wing scoring threat as well. Do-it-all wing players Niko Broadway and Riley Costas, along with Wake Forest football commit Zac Ranson, give Coach Parr a group poised to lift a state title. They currently sit at 3-2, with both losses coming to State Championship teams in Mountain Brook HS (AL) and Greater Atlanta Christian. Coach Parr on the match-up, "We look forward to this early season test against a talented and well coached Newton team. These are the kind of games that prepare your team for tournament time. Our players are excited to play at Buford Arena"

Coach Rick Rasmussen and his Newton HS teams have been one of the most consistent and dominant teams in 7A over the last decade. Since the 2009-10 season, Newton HS has averaged just under 25 wins per season.  They have captured three Elite 8, three Final 4 berths and five Region Championships.  Senior forward Armani Harris (27 points and 9 rebounds) was dominant this past weekend in a matchup vs 7A foe Lambert HS in North Georgia.  Partnering with Harris are senior guards Tre Clark (17 PPG) and Tyrease Brown (13 PPG) which give Coach Rasmussen a trio of experienced leaders who are determined to carry on the programs recent success. They currently sit at 4-0 on the season. Coach Rasmussen says, "We are really excited to be in the BCB Showcase. Great event, environment and competition. We can't wait"

3:00 PM United Faith (11-8) vs. Buford (14-2)

United Faith and Buford were originally scheduled for the BCB December Showcase but, thanks to the generosity of Coach Josh Coley and his team’s willingness to travel, they return on MLK Day looking to go 2-0 at the event.  The Falcons are looking to improve on their state runner-up finish last season in North Carolina and are led by a group of seniors: guard Jaylen Sims (UNCW Commit), guard Rafael Jenkins, forward KC Hanston and center Nate Springs (Ohio Commit).  Coach Coley also relies on juniors Jason Thompson and Sam Wolfe, and with a Buford team finding their stride, the Falcons will need all hands on deck Monday.

Ever since the return of senior PG Alex Jones, the Buford Wolves have been rolling.  With the Lipscomb commit at the helm, life has become easier for Georgia Southern commit David Viti,  sharp-shooter Donnell Nixon and arguably the most talented player on Buford’s team, junior wing/forward Marcus Watson.  Led by the legendary Head Coach Eddie Martin, Buford has once again found themselves as the state championship favorite in 5A and will look to continue their run of good play on Monday against United Faith.

1:30 PM Langston Hughes (13-3) vs. Grayson (12-3)

Langston Hughes returns to the BCB MLK Showcase and they will look to continue their winning ways at the event.  Monday will mark the third game in four days for Coach Rory Welsh and his Panthers, which includes a Friday night region test at #4 Tri-Cities (6A) and Monday’s clash against #8 Grayson (7A).  The Panthers are led by the talented Virginia Tech commit, Landers Nolley, senior wing/forward Tyler Smith and junior guard Tyrel Morgan.  Coach Welsh is known for having his team ready to compete and this weekend will be a great test before they seek to defend their 6A State Championship come March.

Coach Geoffery Pierce and his team have played one of the toughest schedules in the state this season and Monday will continue that trend.  The Rams are led by the senior guard combo of Travii Anderson (Charleston Southern commit) and Nick Edwards, and have gotten key contributions from multiple players this season, including junior forward Kenyon Jackson.  Grayson has their own state title aspirations after losing in the 7A Final Four last season and with a win over Langston Hughes on MLK Day, the Rams will enter the back of the schedule battle proven.

Wednesday, December 6, 2017

6:00 PM United Faith Christian Acacemy (NC) 5-3 vs. Buford HS (GA) 3-2

6:00 PM   United Faith Christian Academy (NC) 5-3 vs. Buford HS (GA) 3-2

Coach Josh Coley and his United Faith team return to Georgia and look to knock off another opponent on their home floor, as they defeated Peachtree Ridge HS at the BCB MLK Showcase last season.  The Falcons look to improve on their state runner-up finish last season and Coach Coley is excited that he gets to return a team led by a group of seniors:  Guard Jaylen Sims (UNCW Commit), Guard Rafael Jenkins, Forward KC Hanston and Center Nate Springs (Ohio Commit).  Once you add Junior wings Jason Thompson and Sam Wolfe to the mix, United Faith has an opportunity to silence the Buford crowd.

This is an exciting week for the Buford Wolves as there have been positive signs which could see team-leader and Lipscomb commit Alex Jones return to the floor.  With Jones down, the Wolves have been led by Georgia Southern commit David Viti and the junior combo of guard Donnell Nixon and the talented, athletic forward Marcus Watson.  Coming off their 5A State Championship in 2017  legendary Head Coach Eddie Martin’s eighth title overall, the Wolves are again the favorite this year. Their slow start to the new season, in part speaks to the value of floor general, Alex Jones but make no mistake, they will be heard from come March.

The boys nightcap features another pair of championship level programs with their eyes on a win Saturday but more importantly, preparing themselves for their state title aspirations.

Monday, December 4, 2017

4:30 PM Hoover HS (AL) 9-1 vs. Norcross HS (GA) 6-1

4:30 PM  Hoover HS (AL) 9-1 vs. Norcross HS (GA) 6-1

Hoover High School found their fame thanks to a good football program but Coach Charles Burkett and his Buccaneers are making their own history on the hardwood.  Over the last three years, they have been widely regarded as one of Alabama’s best teams including a state title win in 2015.  This season Hoover is considered one of the favorites and will lean on the savvy senior guard Marion Humphrey and his sharp-shooting backcourt running mate Jamari Blackmon. Both players are receiving Division I recruiting interest and are undecided.  The addition of 6’11” Clemson commit Trey Jemison (2018) will provide the inside presence to the experienced backcourt that most high school coaches envy. Those factors along with an experienced bench have Coach Burkett and his team excited for the season, chasing more than just a state title.

In the state of Georgia, you would be hard-pressed to find a more consistent and successful program than Coach Jesse McMillan’s Norcross Blue Devils.  Since 2006, Norcross has won 5 State Championships and competed in the Final Four or beyond three additional years. Coach McMillan returns backcourt teammates Dalvin White (2018) and Kyle Sturdivant (2019) both of which are experienced from last year’s state runner-up team. They are joined by the young, talented wing Brandon Boston (2020).  The versatile UGA commit Joseph Toppin (2018) and 2019 forward Issa Muhammad give the Blue Devils a nice inside-outside mix.  Despite losing big men Lance Thomas (Louisville) and Rashaun Hammonds (UGA), this looks to be a case of “next man up” and not rebuild mode for a talented Norcross team.

The matchup pits teams from the highest classification in their respective states against one another, both of which have realistic state championship aspirations.

12:00 PM Shiloh HS (GA) 3-3 vs. Peachtree Ridge (GA) 6-0

12:00 PM  Shiloh HS (3-3) vs. Peachtree Ridge HS (6-0)

The opening matchup of the showcase brings together two annual State Tournament teams from the highest classification in Georgia.

Coach Kim Rivers and his Generals are once again poised for another great season and they come into the event battle tested through six games.  Coach Rivers and the Generals are led by talented 2019 Guard/Wing Elias King.  The 6’7” high-major prospect is working to find his way after one season at Huntington Prep but looks poised and his ability to score in numerous ways make him a tough matchup.  Along with King, Shiloh also bolsters a young lefty wing in Toneari Lane (2020) and an improving inside presence with 6’6” Senior Forward Shamari McLeod.

Their opponent, also from Gwinnett County, Peachtree Ridge is undefeated.  Coach Keith Arrington and his program have been a consistent winner each year and this season should be no different.  The Lions are led by smooth lefty guard Devin Vassell, who is committed to Coach Leonard Hamilton of Florida State, who has found recent success in recruiting the peach state.  Along with Vassell, Coach Arrington leans heavily on his experienced leaders.  Senior guard Tamir Harrison-Chester (2018), forwards Izu Onyekachi (2018) and BJ Knight (2019) will continue to improve as the season progresses.

Look for this game to be a tough, competitive battle between two teams known for their defensive prowess and aggressive play.

1:30 PM York Prep (SC) 5-3 vs. Hamilton Heights (TN) 6-2

1:30 PM   York Prep (SC) 5-3 vs. Hamilton Heights (TN) 6-2

The 1:30 PM matchup provides some early afternoon excitement as two of the best independent programs in the Southeast square off.

Hamilton Heights and Coach Zac Ferrell are excited about the 2017-2018 season.  After losing nine Division 1 players over the last two years, Ferrell’s Hawks have reloaded with a group led by the 6’4” G Kevaughn Ellis (2018) who has numerous SEC offers, mid-major prospect 6’ 11” C Jason Jitiboh (2019) and the 7’1” Cleveland State commit, Uros Plavsic.  With three other players averaging double digits in points; Jordan Rawls (Guard 2019), Wheza Panzo (Guard 2019) and Tre Edwards (Guard 2019), the Hawks are poised for another great season and look to rebound after a tough early-season loss to Oak Hill.

York Prep returns to a BCB Event for the second year in a row after an impressive win in the 2017 MLK event.  The Patriots, like the Hawks, have a nice blend of talent and bolster their own impressive list of prospects. Backcourt teammates, Jaron Williams (committed to Longwood) and Vince Cole (Guard 2018, Multiple D-1 offers), return for their senior seasons and are joined by newcomer Deuce Dean (Guard 2019), which provides Coach Hamrick with depth and versatility at the guard spots. Transfer Forward Dericko Williams (2019) and established 4-Star Forward DJ Burns (2019) make York Prep tough to guard inside and out.

3:00 PM Porter Guad (SC) 6-0 vs. McEachern (GA) 3-0

3:00 PM  Porter Gaud (SC) 6-0 vs. McEachern HS (GA) 3-0

The reigning two-time 3A South Carolina State Champ, Porter Gaud, comes to the Buford City Arena to test themselves against one of the younger and more talented teams in the state of Georgia and the country in McEachern.

Coach John Pearson’s Cyclones are on the verge of entering the “dynasty” conversation in the South Carolina hoops world and now look to conquer one of Georgia’s top teams.  Porter Gaud is led by the senior Vandy commit, Aaron Nesmith (Guard) and 4-Star Wing Josiah James (2019).  Both Nesmith and James are experienced returners that have the ability to control the game at both ends of floor.  Once you add the inside presence of Center Jake Lanford (2018) and Senior Guard Jake Nutley (2018), Porter Gaud is poised for another state title run and a chance to declare themselves one of the best in the Southeast.

Expectations are high this season for Coach Mike Thompson and this matchup will be no different.  The Indians are one of Georgia’s and the country’s most talented young teams with only two seniors on the roster.  Their deep run to the Final Four in Georgia’s highest classification last season make McEachern an early season favorite in 2018. Guard Sharife Cooper (2020), wing Isaac Okoro (2019), forwards Jared Jones (2019) and Babatunde Akingbola (2019) are all considered high level prospects but numerous other Indians are contributors which makes this team so dangerous.

The established state champ from South Carolina, Porter Gaud, looks to bolster their own legacy and will need a great effort to take down a loaded McEachern squad.  This has the potential to be the game of the day.

Stop Playing the Lottery, Start Winning

“I hope I have a good year next year.”

I have heard this comment from hundreds of athletes since I have been around the game of basketball as both a player and coach. Heck, I probably even said to myself at some point.

Stop basing your game on hope and start building it on WORK.

Why do so many players prepare for the season like they are playing the lottery? Playing the lottery is hoping something happens. It’s why I don’t play the lottery. I want to go earn what I get in my life.

Here is a common conversation I have with players during the off-season.
Player: “Coach, I’m going to the gym. “

Me (Coach): “What are you going to do at the gym?”

Player: “Getting up shots”

Me: “What type of shots?” (This is when I usually get a strange look back…the wheels start turning and the athlete fumbles through their words thinking about what they are going to do and what I want to hear).

Me: “You don’t have a plan. You’re basing your game on hope.”

The first thing you do when going somewhere is figure out how you are going to get there. If you go on a trip in the car, you plug in the address to your GPS system. If you are taking a class at school, you get a syllabus from your teacher or professor that outlines what you need to do and how you can get an A or B in the class.  If you are going to cook something, you buy the ingredients at the store and follow the recipe.

“Direction and discipline, not intention, determines your destiny and success.”

When working with athletes, I often talk to them about a 3D philosophy. I have found that the athletes and people that have all three of these D’s are coming much closer to maximizing their potential and vision. The three D’s I’m referring to are this:
Dream (vision, goals)
Direction (plan)
Discipline (self-discipline – habits)

It starts with a dream. Once you are clear on your dreams, vision and goals, you can map out your direction. Your direction is your plan and process of how you will accomplish your dreams. Coaches are a great resource in helping you establish your direction and off-season training.  The third D, discipline ultimately falls on the athlete. A coach can help some with a player’s discipline, however, it ultimately comes back to the player’s self-discipline.  The highest level of discipline are habits. At PGC (Point Guard College) we often ask athletes at our summer courses this question.

Are you training according to your aspirations?

Prepare with urgency and imagination.  As a player, I used to love the off-season. I came to realize this was my time to separate. When you have inferior athleticism and speed, you must out-skill and out-will your opponent. This comes through a ridiculous dedication to off-season training. Being in an empty, hot gym or outside in the driveway or park is where players are born and games are won and lost.  This is where playing time is earned and opponents are beaten.

The problem is most athletes don’t carry this same thought.  Most athletes hope to improve their shot, get a better handle, or become a more dynamic playmaker.

Stop hoping and start working.

Another important piece to development is having an imagination. It  is critical to maximizing your time and efforts. There will be days when you don’t feel like it. There will be times when you are in an empty, dark gym.  In these moments, you have to remind yourself  that you want to perform when the lights come on.  During these lonely times, put yourself in the season. Imagine you’re playing in that championship game. Visualizing yourself going against the best defender or team you have ever played against can help spark your intensity and training efforts.

Action Steps for this Off-Season (Separation Season):
1)   Decide your Dreams, Goals and Vision. It can even be helpful to break your dreams into three time frames (short-term, intermediate, long-term)
2)   Map out your direction and plan. Be specific. If your doing a shooting workout, saying you will get up 200 shots isn’t good enough. More exact the better:
a.     i.e. 100 made 3pt shots (40 from right and left corner, 40 from right and left wing, 20 from top of key area). 25 mid range 1 dribble pull-up jumpers going right, 25 mid range 1 dribble pull-up jumpers going left. 25 Mid range catch-shoot no dribble, 25 free throws
3)   Create the discipline that matches your habits. One great way to help create the discipline you need is to surround yourself with people that hold you accountable. Find that guy or girl who is the hardest working kid in your program or in your area and train with them.
